Just after surgery...I'm ready for my close-up...

Yes Yes Y'All

This is what I looked like about 4 hours after my surgery.  Surgery lasted only about 2.5 hours for top & bottom + sliding genioplasty.  At this point, I'm finally out of recovery room #1 (having never made it to recovery room #2... I was having some trouble breathing right so they monitored me closely in the first one...I stayed until closing).

I had top and bottom jaw surgery.  Just before surgery, I signed a consent and noticed there was also "sliding genioplasty" written down on the form of "to-do's" for the day.  This was news to me, so I made a quick decision to go ahead and have that done as well.  I knew my chin was not going to be made worse should it be a little more prominent than before (see post #1 for photographic evidence suggesting that this was in fact, a wise choice).

Leading thoughts @ this point:

  • "I'm so glad I can sort of breathe now"
  • "I'm so glad they finally removed that bandage that was impeding my breathing...what took them so long?"
  • "I'm so glad I'm alive"
  • "I must look really bad...Oh well"
  •  "Yay...I didn't throw up!"
  • "Evidently, 80's bangs are back!"

I'm getting my bottom jaw moved forward, my chin centered, and my upper jaw pushed up. I'm so nervous, my surgery is in about a month. Is that what you had done? I'm not sure what my surgery is called, I haven't seen Dr. Tocchio since I got my wisdom teeth removed about 6 months ago. You mentioned that breathing was a problem for you? Thats not good news for me, I have mild asthma which gets worse with allergies, which is what I have now. I can barely breath now. Any advice?

  4. Humidifier, asthma inhaler (you should still be able to use it), mild decongestant (NOT buckleys!), antihistamines (they sell them in 50mg format and are great for severe allergies but will knock you out). Maybe don't mix all these together at the same time. :)

I wouldn't worry about the asthma. They will review these things with you prior. Don't worry about the surgery itself either. Tocchio has done thousands. He's a pro. You are having exactly what I had. It will feel better after 10-12 days. Then it's just slow-going recovery until you can eat and talk like a normal person again. Sometimes I fail at this, but this isn't because of surgery, sadly. I'm just human.

Thank you so much, your blog has really helped me. My surgery is on monday, one day left to go all out and eat to my heart's content, using Dr. Tocchio's words! Hopefully I won't be in too much discomfort, but I definetly won't be getting my hopes up too high! This is my first major surgery, besides getting my tonsils removed when I was about a year old, I'm only 15! He said that this 15 is the youngest age he will perfom the surgery at, I was reffered to him at 14 so I had to wait just over a year for this, can't really back out now. Oh well, I just have to look at the big picture! Sorry for rambling, I just want to say thank you again for making this blog, and your results look AMAZING by the way, its a subtle but dramatic difference :) Thanks again!

OMG!!! You are GORGEOUS!!! Im having upper and lower jaw surgery. I have an open bite and I am totally scared!!! My surgeon and orthodontist think it'll be later this year or early next year. But, I don't think my teeth are staight enough yet. But it's at least six mos away so maybe it'll straighten out by then. Did u have nose surgery too? Your whole side profile changed!!! You look like a totally diff person!!! I love the before and after pics!!! I'm in the army and the surgeon doing my surgery will retire after my surgery. I'll have two really good surgeons working on me. Did u lose weight after your surgery? They told me I would lose somewhere around 20 to 30 pounds. Woohoo!!! Always a good thing, lol! I want to start a blog just like you!!! How do I get started? I want to give hope to those out there that are about to have the same surgery we had! You surely gave me hope!!! I'm super excited!!!

  9. Hey Bren. There are tons of other blogs out there, just google "jaw surgery". Doing your own blog is pretty easy, in fact I'm sure you've already figured it out. Good luck with your surgery, you can expect a 20 to 15 lb loss but I woulnt say 30. That is unusual. And the more nutrition you get, the faster you will heal, so try to include whey progein powder and ensure in your diet to get the healing going. Take care!
